Learning about Human Rights through The Journey by Francesca Sanna

This week we finished reading The Journey by Francesca Sanna.  We have thoroughly enjoyed this beautifully illustrated book that is told through the eyes of a young girl.  The story explores the unimaginable decisions made as a mother and her two children are forced to flee their home and everyone they know to escape the turmoil of war.  The story allowed us to reflect on how lucky we are in our lives and to contemplate what life can be like for others who are not as fortunate as we are.  We wrote alternative endings to the book and we used this opportunity to showcase the writing skills that we have developed over the course of this term.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 14

If someone hurts us, we have the right to go to another country and ask for protection.

Convention on the Rights of the Child Article 22

You have the right to special protection and help if you are a refugee (someone who has been forced to flee their own country because of persecution, war or violence).
