Our Secondary scientists were recently carrying out a number of tests on different types of food to determine what nutrients they contained. They tested the food for starch, protein, sugar and fat using a variety of different chemical solutions, and then observing if the solution changes colour. For example, the students test for starch using an iodine solution. Two drops of the solution which is brown in colour is poured onto the food and if starch is present the solution changes into a blue/black colour!
