This year saw our first Holy Mary (online) chess tournament, with over 40 students taking part of all ages and levels from Year 7 to Year 13. After many fantastic games and a handful of upsets, Nicolás H (Year 12) emerged champion, edging past Teresa C (Year 8) in a superb final. Unable to capitalise on her early – and mid-game dominance, Teresa, under time pressure, was slowly outplayed in a tense end-game in which Nicolás managed to secure victory by cooly pushing his pawns and executing a stunning checkmate with his newly promoted Queen. With the tournament over, chess-fever lingers in Holy Mary, with many students keen to improve and some even signing up to chess summer camp. All eyes will be on Nicolás next year. Let’s see if he can hold onto his crown!
